Cambodia Requests World Bank to Initiate Siem Reap Electric Vehicle Project

The Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol has requested the World Bank (WB) to help encourage the usage of electric vehicles in Siem Reap, while also asking this international body to implement three other projects to help enhance the transport infrastructure system in Cambodia.

This proposal was made during a meeting between HE Sun Chanthol and Ms Maryam Salim, the new World Bank Cambodia Country Director on Wednesday 8 September.

According to the meeting, the first proposal is the request to the World Bank to support the project of establishing electric vehicles (EV) usage in Siem Reap town, or within the Angkor Park in particular, when Cambodia reopens tourism after COVID-19 subsides.

The second request is for World Bank to consider installing AI Camera and Weigh-in-Motion Sensor Centralised Database Solution System at major NRs to prevent road damage caused by overweight trucks.

Meanwhile, the ministry has also requested the World Bank to help to provide professors and experts to teach at the newly established Techo Sen Public Works and Transport Institute.

Lastly, HE Sun Chanthol asked the World Bank to consider the possibility of organising a program to solve road traffic safety issues and reduce traffic accidents.

In response, Maryam Salim expressed interest and stated that the team would study the proposal in detail.
