In a monumental step toward expanding national logistics and maritime connectivity, Funan Techo Coastal-Inland Waterway Co., Ltd. signed a landmark financing agreement worth nearly $1 billion with the Export-Import Bank of China on the morning of September 9, 2026. The historic signing ceremony was presided over by H.E. Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, with participation from senior representatives of line ministries, state institutions, and international corporate leaders. The substantial financial package provides core capital momentum to drive the development of the historic Funan Techo Canal project.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol extended profound gratitude to the governments of Cambodia and China, China Exim Bank, and all participating development partners for their unified support in realizing the mega-infrastructure venture. He characterized the Funan Techo Canal as a true game changer for Cambodia’s economic landscape. Beyond drastically lowering inland-to-sea freight transport costs, the waterway is designed to establish a vibrant new economic corridor that will systematically attract high-value investments in industrial manufacturing, multi-modal logistics hubs, agro-processing, and eco-tourism along its route.

The Funan Techo Integrated Water Resource Management Project represents a transformational engineering initiative designed to seamlessly connect Cambodia’s inland river networks directly to the sea. Section 2 of the mega-project spans a total length of 151.6 kilometers, originating from Prek Po on the Bassac River in Kandal province and stretching through to the coastal waters of Kep province. Once fully constructed and operational, the strategic waterway will serve as a vital economic artery for the nation, dramatically enhancing transport efficiency and catalyzing the establishment of new special economic zones across the southern region.
