In a groundbreaking development, Thailand and Cambodia have embarked on a collaborative venture to establish a special working group dedicated to wildfire prevention, marking a significant step towards enhanced disaster management. The announcement was made following a pivotal cabinet meeting that laid the groundwork for this innovative strategy aimed at mitigating the impacts of wildfires. The collaboration involves the creation of a wildfire emergency hotline, facilitated by Cambodia and Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to enable rapid communication and response in times of crisis.

In parallel, the Cambodian government is preparing to join a task force with Thailand to spearhead the establishment of this vital communication link. This move is part of a broader plan unveiled at the cabinet meeting, reflecting a proactive approach to disaster preparedness and resilience.

Similarly, Thailand’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is gearing up to launch ‘Team Thailand’, a coordinated effort with Cambodia to address the escalating threat of wildfires upon receiving the emergency call from the wildfire site.

It’s worth noting that on 13 January 2024, Thailand’s Prime Minister, Sretha Thavisin, declared his commitment to collaborate with Cambodia in addressing the issue of smog along the border.
