Cambodian PM announces development of four provinces despite Cambodia’s withdrawal from CLV-DTA

The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, has confirmed that the development plans for four provinces in Cambodia’s northeastern region will proceed as planned, despite Cambodia’s decision to withdraw from the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Triangle Development Cooperation (CLV-DTA). The announcement was made in a special voice message on September 23, 2024.

Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that regardless of the CLV-DTA cooperation, the Royal Government of Cambodia is committed to developing the northeastern region, including enhancing border posts with neighbouring countries, building infrastructure such as the border ring road, and implementing investment incentives to promote economic growth in the region by 2025.

During the announcement, the Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to the individuals who contributed to the fund for the construction of the border ring road. Approximately 700,000 philanthropists have donated around $21 million for this initiative. The funds will be utilized for the construction of border infrastructure, with a specific focus on the border ring road.

It’s important to note that the Royal Government of Cambodia withdrew from the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Cooperation (CLV-DTA) on September 20, 2024, after 25 years of collaboration initiated by Cambodia. The government cited the need to prevent extremists from exploiting the CLV-DTA to deceive the Cambodian people as the reason for the withdrawal.
