Cambodia’s Largest Power Plant Officially Goes Online

A 700-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Sihanoukville has officially launched after a successful testing, according to a Chinese media report on 17 December. 

The plant is a joint venture between Cambodia International Investment and Development Group (CIIDG) and China Huadian Hong Kong Co Ltd (CHDHK) worth US$1.2 billion. (Read more)

Located in Stung Hav district, Sihanoukville, the project was 27 months under construction from August 2020 to November 2022, becoming the largest coal-fired power plant in Cambodia. 

The plant is built with modern technology and Chinese standards that are carefully considered to protect the environment. 

According to the EDC, the demand for electricity in Cambodia increased to 4,014 megawatts in 2021, an increase of about 1% from 2020. 

About 3,033 megawatts of electricity is generated through hydropower dams, coal-fired power plants, fuel-fired power plants, solar power plants and biological power plants, while 981 megawatts are imported from neighbouring Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.
