China builds one of the world’s deepest offshore wind farm with Bentley Software

Fujian Yongfu Power Engineering has successfully developed one of the world’s deepest offshore wind facilities by leveraging advanced digital design solutions from Bentley Systems.

Faced with the daunting task of building 62 turbines in waters up to 45 meters deep, the engineering team had to overcome extreme environmental threats, including frequent typhoons, unstable seabed soil, and high-magnitude earthquakes.

Traditional design methods proved insufficient, leading to overly expensive and disjointed models that could not accurately simulate how massive turbine foundations would interact with the ocean floor.

To solve this, Fujian Yongfu turned to Bentley’s PLAXIS and SACS Wind Turbine software. These tools provided a unified digital environment that allowed engineers to simultaneously model the structures and analyze soil effects.

This seamless integration enabled the team to optimize a specialized three-pile suction conduit frame, a design that is both more stable and easier to install than traditional foundations.

The benefits of using Bentley’s software suite were immediate and substantial. The optimized design reduced project costs by 30%, saving over CNY 400 million.

Beyond the financial gains, the software helped accelerate construction and minimize the project’s environmental footprint.

Once fully operational, the wind farm is expected to eliminate the use of 535,000 tons of coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 1.5 million tons annually, marking a significant win for both engineering innovation and global sustainability.

Fujian Yongfu Power Engineering needed to build a large wind farm in an area prone to typhoons, earthquakes, and shifting soil.
The wind farm eliminates the use of 535,000 tons of coal annually and cuts down on carbon dioxide emissions from various power generation sources by 1,462,600 tons.
