Construction of USD 90 Million Wastewater Treatment System Begins in Takhmao City

Takhmao City is set to embark on a transformative journey towards improved environmental sustainability and public health, as the construction of a state-of-the-art USD 90 million wastewater treatment system officially commenced on May 6, 2025. The project, spanning an impressive 30 hectares, is being financed through a concessional loan from the Government of the Republic of Korea.

The ceremonial groundbreaking was chaired by Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Samdech Hun Manet, alongside H.E. PARK Jung-Wook, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Cambodia. This milestone event marks a significant step in addressing the pressing environmental challenges faced by the region.

Implemented by the joint venture of KUMHO-TECHCROSS, with technical oversight from DOHWA-SEOYOUNG, the project boasts a total contract value exceeding $90 million and is set to be completed in 2027, following a construction period of 36 months.

The initiative is divided into two main components:

  1. Wastewater Treatment Plants: This part of the project will include the construction of a modern wastewater treatment plant utilizing a natural filtration pond method (Waste Stabilization Pond). The facility is designed to filter up to 12,000 cubic meters of wastewater daily and will be complemented by the establishment of seven wastewater pumping stations and an extensive network of sewerage systems spanning 125.3 kilometers. The infrastructure will serve six communes: Kampong Sanhanh, Deum Mien, Taktol, Takhmao, Prek Hor, and Prek Russey, covering a total area of approximately 974 hectares.
  1. Flood Relief Systems: The second component aims to enhance flood management by constructing storm sewer networks, which will include the installation of box culverts and circular culverts along National Road No. 21. This segment of the project will also involve the construction and rehabilitation of two storm sewer pumping stations and additional storm sewer networks throughout Takhmao City.

Upon completion, this advanced wastewater treatment system is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents across the affected communes, improving environmental sanitation and alleviating flooding concerns during the rainy season. This monumental project not only underscores the commitment to sustainable development but also reflects the collaborative efforts between Cambodia and South Korea in fostering a cleaner, healthier future for all.
