Deep Repair on ‘Forever-Damaged’ Kampot-Veal Renh Road Still Awaiting Chinese Funds

The deep rehabilitation project on the so called ‘forever-damaged’ 20km section of NR 3 from Kampot to Veal Renh, is still waiting for the funds from China although the technical study has already been completed.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has promised to make temporary repairs to facilitate travel, according to Minister of Public Works and Transport Minister HE Sun Chanthol during a site inspection on 29 March.

“The 20km NR3 section from Kampot to Veal Renh is known as the ‘forever-damaged’ road, especially the 5km section with 18m-deep muddy foundations. No matter how many times we have repaired, it still does not last,” said HE Sun Chanthol.

“The condition is getting worse after NR4 is under expansion, so the traffic was diverted to this road instead. Thus, we are working hard to fix this one as soon as possible,” he added.

CRBC company has already studied a technical engineering method by removing the muddy soil and building steel reinforcements to strengthen the foundations. The work will be divided into two sections with an estimated cost of US$60-70 million. (Read more)

“The road is only 20 km long. However, we are doing the standardised deep repair which is why it costs a lot. The Ministry of Economy and Finance has already submitted the funding request to China and is now waiting for an answer,” said HE Sun Chanthol.
