In a landmark development aimed at bolstering Cambodia’s infrastructure, discussions between Cambodia and Japan have paved the way for the commencement of foundation construction for Phase I of the Sihanoukville Deep Sea Port. The foundation work is set to involve the creation of concrete pillars and is scheduled to take place before the close of 2023, signifying a significant milestone as Cambodia and Japan celebrate the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Hun Manet, unveiled this crucial step during a meeting with garment workers at a Special Economic Zone in Prey Nob district, Preah Sihanoukville province on 7 November 7.

He affirmed, “We are renovating the container space to accommodate cargo ships, but more importantly, we have worked with Japan to invest in the expansion of our deep-sea port Phase I. I hope the project’s foundation construction will be completed before the end of the year 2023.”

The collaborative efforts with Japan highlight the commitment to enhance the seaport’s infrastructure. Deputy Prime Minister HE. Sun Chanthol’s discussions with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have paved the way for securing the budget for the first phase of the Sihanoukville Deep Sea Port expansion, positioning the project as a focal point of celebration during the significant year of 2023. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Japan, underlining the historical importance of the project.

Phase I of the Sihanoukville Deep Sea Port expansion project promises to bring about remarkable enhancements. This phase encompasses an initial 350-meter length and a water depth of 14.5 meters.
