115-hectare Solar Plant to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Cambodia

A project to build a 115-hectare solar power plant in Kompong Speu province will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Cambodia, according to the results of an inter-ministerial meeting regarding the development of the project.

According to a Facebook post by the Ministry of Environment, the inter-ministerial meeting last week found that the solar-powered development by SchneiTec Group will greatly benefit Cambodia citing that the price of produced electricity sold to Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC) would be 7.6 US dollar cents per kilowatt-hour. Moreover, the project will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Cambodia.

The meeting also covered 7 key points.

1-Review, analyse and present the characteristics and information of the development project and establish a 60-megawatt solar power plant on 115 hectares of land.
2-Study biological resources, biological resources and social economic resources within and around the project as a benchmark for environmental and social impact assessments.
3-Hold consultations with local people, local authorities and related specialised departments for recommendations on the project
4-Identify the size of the environmental impact on natural resources and the existing social environment in the study area both positively and negatively due to the project’s operational activities.
5-Identify environmental and social impacts (negative) that can occur from project activities at a minimum level.
6-Analyse economic value and environmental values both in positive and negative terms.
7-Prepare environmental and social funds to restore the environment and participate in the development of villages that are associated with the investment projects.
