In a significant development for Cambodia’s economic landscape, 14 major Canadian companies have expressed a strong interest in the Cambodian market, recognizing it as a strategic gateway to the ASEAN region. This announcement came during a meeting between HE Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, and leaders from these Canadian enterprises and business institutions.

The meeting aimed to highlight Cambodia’s investment potential under the newly established investment law and attract Canadian investors to explore opportunities, particularly in priority sectors such as agro-industry, healthcare, tourism, and technology. HE Sun Chanthol emphasized the importance of this engagement, noting that it serves as a platform to enhance bilateral economic, trade, and investment cooperation, as well as to bolster negotiations for the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA).

During the discussions, representatives from various Canadian companies conveyed their enthusiasm for Cambodia’s market potential, particularly in using the country as a launchpad to access broader ASEAN markets.

This interest arises at a time when Cambodia’s trade volume with major global economies has soared to over $36 billion in the first seven months of 2025, representing a 16.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to a recent report by the General Department of Customs and Excise.

As Cambodia continues to position itself as a competitive destination for foreign investment, these developments signal a promising future for both Cambodian and Canadian businesses in the region.
