American Biotech Pioneer Charles River Laboratories Launches Landmark $500 Million Project in Kampong Thom

High-tech biomedical research and breeding facility set to modernize Cambodia’s scientific sector while creating skilled jobs and enhancing international research collaboration

Cambodia’s push to diversify its industrial base beyond traditional sectors has received a massive boost with the official launch of a long-term investment phase by Charles River Laboratories (CRL). The United States-based life sciences leader has committed $500 million toward a large-scale project in Kampong Thom province, focusing on the establishment of specialized monkey breeding farms and a modern industrial park. This initiative represents a strategic shift for CRL as it seeks greater operational control over its supply chain for drug discovery and safety assessment.

The project was officially inaugurated on January 15, 2026, during a ceremony presided over by Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth. Speaking at the event, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that the investment marks a milestone in Cambodia-U.S. cooperation in agriculture and science. He emphasized that the Kampong Thom province was selected for its strategic central location, which offers ideal conditions for the company’s long-term operational needs.

Beyond its significant financial capital, the project is expected to deliver a wide range of socio-economic benefits to the local community. The facility will create numerous new jobs for residents in Kampong Thom and introduce advanced international standards in biotechnology and biosafety to the region. By fostering global collaboration in health and biology research, the center is positioned to contribute to scientific advancements that have a positive impact on humanity worldwide.

A key component of the project’s operation is its rigorous adherence to international regulations. Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth underscored that all activities must remain fully transparent and compliant with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) as well as global standards for animal welfare and environmental protection. To further demonstrate its commitment to ethical business practices, CRL has signed a memorandum of understanding with Cambodia’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) and established a corporate social responsibility (CSR) program to support local education and healthcare infrastructure.

This major investment is viewed by the Royal Government as a clear signal that Cambodia is a pro-business destination capable of hosting high-value industries. As Charles River Laboratories integrates its new Kampong Thom operations into its global network, the project is set to enhance Cambodia’s reputation as an emerging hub for the global life sciences and biomedical research industries.
