Battambang Provincial Authority Asks France to Preserve Ancient Buildings to Promote Tourism

The Battambang provincial authority has asked France to look into the possibility of helping preserve ancient buildings in Battambang so that Battambang can earn a living through tourists, according to a meeting between HE Sok Lou, Governor of Battambang Province, and HE Jacques Pellet, Ambassador of France to Cambodia on 22 June 2022.

The governor said that the Battambang Provincial Administration has taken care to maintain the construction of ancient buildings and prevent people from repairing ancient houses different from the original form of the building.

HE Sok Lou continued that due to the lack of technical assistance and budget, some ancient buildings, and a market, which was built in the French colonial period, are facing risks.

Responding to this, HE Jacques Pellet said that France has also considered the conservation of heritage buildings in Cambodia by planning to develop and preserve 20th-century heritage buildings. This process needs to study the design documents in detail and discuss them with partners of France first.

In addition, during the meeting, the governor also asked French investors to consider the possibility of investing in the construction of fruit processing plants in Battambang to facilitate export abroad.

In relevance to the preservation of buildings, the Battambang provincial authority has already requested Japan to transform Battambang Provincial Museum into a modern and smart facility, equipped with digital art or VR technology in the museum. (Read more)
