Cambodia’s Banana Exports Flourish as China Remains Top Market

In a significant boost to its agricultural sector, Cambodia exported a remarkable 260,000 tons of fresh bananas in 2024, with a staggering 95% of this yield headed for the Chinese market. This surge in banana exports highlights Cambodia’s growing influence in the international agricultural arena.

To date, Cambodia boasts 21,000 hectares dedicated to yellow banana plantations, with 15,000 hectares actively under harvest. The average yield stands at an impressive 25 tons per hectare. Notably, the country’s total banana production reached 400,000 tons, with 24 banana plantations and 36 packing facilities officially recognized for exporting fresh bananas to China.

On 6 June 2025, during the inauguration of the fresh banana supply chain by the Cambodia Banana Agricultural Chemical Company, HE Kong Chanveasna, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, praised the company’s investment in local banana plantations. He emphasized that Cambodia’s agricultural sector plays a vital role in ensuring food security and contributing to national economic growth.

In 2024, the agricultural sector exported 12 million tons of various products to 95 countries, valued at approximately USD 5.3 billion. Notably, over 800,000 tons of these exports were destined for China, reinforcing the country’s position as a major player in the global market.

While the vast majority of bananas go to China, a small percentage is also exported to Vietnam, South Korea, and Malaysia. This diversification not only strengthens Cambodia’s economic prospects but also enhances the livelihoods of its farmers.

The company behind the fresh banana supply chain is also committed to supplying fresh bananas to local supermarkets while preparing for more substantial exports. Following the successful export of 20,000 tons in 2024, plans are underway to increase that figure to 30,000 tons by 2025, further solidifying Cambodia’s standing in the fresh fruit market.

With continued investment and a focus on quality, Cambodia aims to establish itself as a leading exporter of fresh bananas, leveraging its favourable agricultural conditions and pivotal market relationships, especially with China.
