Boeng Prek Lapov in Takeo Province to be Listed as Ramsar Site

The Ministry of Environment has prepared to list the wetlands of Prek Lapov Lake in Takeo province as a Ramsar site due to its natural benefits to both rare species of animals and local people.

HE Neth Pheaktra, Secretary of State and spokesperson at the Ministry of Environment, said on 17 July that listing a wetland area as a Ramsar site requires a study and collection of the biodiversity and ecological potential in that area.

After studying, the team will compile information and discuss community-based relevant parties at the sub-national level and national level before making the decision.

The ministry plans to announce the official listing of the wetlands as the Ramsar site once the appropriate discussions have been concluded.

Including the Prek Lapov Lake as Ramsar site will see Cambodia have six Ramsar sites across the country – including Ramsar in Stung Treng, Koh Kapi, Boeng Tonle Chhmar, Prek Tuol, and Stung Sen covering a total wetland of 42,252 hectares.

A Ramsar Site is a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The convention is an intergovernmental environmental treaty established in 1971 by UNESCO, which came into force in 1975.
