By 2022, Cambodian Government Implementing 19 Water Projects Worth Over US$747m

The Cambodian Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation has been busy implementing 19 water projects with a total budget of USD 747.49 million, according to a recent progress report on the ministry’s work activities.

The total budget comprises US$ 129.49 million in grant financing and US$ 618 million in concessional financing.

Among the 19 water projects, 14 are infrastructure developments in the water sector, including:

• Kampong Thom Water Supply Capacity Expansion Project (March 2019-April 2022): This project costs about US$5 million with the assistance of Japan, which has completed the construction and is in the process of managing the operation and maintenance.
• Pursat Water Supply System Capacity Building Project (August, 2021-August, 2023): Approximately 21.86 million USD with the assistance of JICA, which has completed 64%. (Read more)
• Svay Rieng Water Supply Expansion Project: This project costs about US$24 million with the assistance of JICA, which is still studying the detailed technical plan. It should be noted that this project has been re-provided with more than US$30 million, the old aid provided in the past. (Read more)
• Small water purification treatment project: with the assistance of JICA, which is in the feasibility study phase, implemented at Pursat Provincial Water Supply Authority and Siem Reap Autonomous Authority.
• Sustainable Water Supply Project by Introducing Water Supply Facility Ledger System: with the assistance of JICA, which will be implemented for three years (starting in August 2022), planned to be implemented at Svay Rieng Provincial Water Supply Authority and Siem Reap Water Supply Authority.
• Urban water supply project (loan from ADB): The total budget is US$37.4 million, of which the contribution of the Royal Government is 3.4 million US dollars. This project will be implemented from 2015 to 2022 and applies to Kampong Cham, Pursat, Kampot, Svay Rieng, Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Stung Treng, Sihanoukville, and Stong.
• Provincial Water and Sanitation Project: A total budget of US$119.17 million is being implemented from 2018 to 2024 at Battambang Provincial Water Supply Authority and Kampong Cham Provincial Water Supply Authority. (Read more and more)
• Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority’s Takhmao Water Supply System Expansion Project: A total budget of US$31.1 million with the assistance of JICA from 2022 to 2024 and under construction. (Read more)
• Bak Kheng Water Supply Project, Phase 1 of Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority: with a total cost of US$247 million to be implemented from 2020 to 2022. (Read more)
• Water supply system capacity expansion project, Prek Village, Phnom Penh, Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority: A total of US$22.4 million will be provided by JICA. (Read more)
• Bak Kheng Water Supply Project, Phase 2, Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority: With a total budget of US$134.4 million US dollars. The project is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2024. (Read more)
• Siem Reap Water Supply System Capacity Expansion Project (loan from JICA): A total budget of US$123 million will be implemented from 2012 to 2023, which is under construction.
• Siem Reap Water Supply Authority’s project to improve water supply and sanitation to prevent Covid 19 disease: Under the assistance of JICA, the budget is approximately 638,220 USD, which has been implemented from 2021 to 2022.

The remaining five projects are focused on capacity building, including training and the preparation of guidelines. One notable initiative is the Sustainable Water Supply Project, which aims to introduce a water supply facility ledger system and is being implemented over three years starting in August 2022 at the Svay Rieng Provincial Water Supply Authority and Siem Reap Water Supply Authority.

With such significant investments being made into water infrastructure, Cambodia is set to significantly enhance the country’s water supply infrastructure, improve access to clean water for its citizens and boost economic development in the process.
