Cambodia Airports vows to finish Sihanoukville Airport expansion by 2022

Cambodia Airports has vowed to finish the first phase of the Sihanoukville Airport expansion project by mid-2022, following the final master plan to boost this airport to accommodate larger aircraft and handle up to 10 million passengers per year.

The statement was made during a meeting between the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation between the Cambodia Airports representatives on 25 February.

During the meeting, the two parties discussed four main agenda items, including the expansion of a new passenger terminal, the runway upgrade, the construction of the new taxiway, and, most importantly, the overall airport expansion.

The terminal expansion is divided into two phases. The first phase expansion is scheduled to begin this year and be completed by 2022. Upon completion, the new terminal will be able to handle up to 3.6 million passengers, while the second phase is the expansion of the terminal to handle up to 5 million passengers. According to the firm, the masterplan is to make this airport handle up to 10 million passengers per year.

Regarding the runway expansion from 2,500 metres to 3,300 metres, the project is currently ongoing and scheduled to be completed by mid-2020. (Read More)

Cambodia Airports has also revealed plans to expand and strengthen the 420-metre long taxiway, although the firm has yet to reveal the detail and timelines of this project.

Figures from Cambodia Airports, the company that manages three international airports in Cambodia, show that the number of passengers through Sihanouk International Airport rose by 210% in the first half of this year, to 755,000.
