Cambodia Requests ADB to Speed Up Census of Wastewater Treatment Sites in Phnom Penh

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has requested the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Cambodia to accelerate the census of wastewater treatment sites in Phnom Penh as soon as possible in order to find ways to address the common impact of the shortage of a drainage network in Phnom Penh.

The proposal was presented at a workshop on wastewater and slush management in Phnom Penh on 5 May 2022.

HE Trac Thai Sieng, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said that the purpose of the workshop was to review the Master Plan for Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) Initiative on improving the entire sanitation service chain, store, pump, transport and treat.

He also mentioned the history of choosing the location of wastewater treatment in the capital and the overall impact of the people on the lack of drainage network.

He also requested Mr Tony Gill, Director of the Asian Development Bank in Cambodia to help speed up the census to select a wastewater treatment plant in Phnom Penh as soon as possible.

The census project to select wastewater treatment sites in Phnom Penh was started in March 2021 and is scheduled to be completed in June 2022.

To date, the project has completed the evaluation, sanitation system status, backyard survey, groundwater availability survey, sewerage service provider survey, public toilet management, and utilization survey, water utility enterprises (factory) survey, and local water quality study in Phnom Penh.

In addition to the above study, measurement, and survey, the project study team also met with various relevant institutions to get all the components for the preparation of a master plan on sanitation in the city better before submitting it to the two project implementing institutions, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Phnom Penh Capital Administration, for further review and recommendation before submitting to the Royal Government.
