Cambodia, CRBC Sign a framework agreement on PP-SR-Poipet Expressway: A Transformative Step Towards Cambodian Modern Transportation

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has signed a significant framework agreement with the esteemed China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC) to embark on an in-depth study of the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap-Poipet Expressway project.

This momentous agreement, announced by HE Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister of Public Works and Transport, during an interview on June 7, 2023, marks a crucial milestone in Cambodia’s pursuit of modern infrastructure development.

Under this framework agreement, the CRBC will undertake an extensive study to meticulously evaluate the construction prospects of the expressway’s third phase. This phase encompasses a 250-kilometer stretch from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, as well as the subsequent 150-kilometer section from Siem Reap to Poipet. The detailed study is expected to be completed within 12 months, following which the findings will be presented to the Royal Government for comprehensive review and decision-making.

Highlighting the significance of the project, HE Sun Chanthol emphasized that the estimated cost of the construction project for the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap phase is approximately US$2.5 billion, with an estimated expenditure of US$10 million per kilometer. These numbers underscore the scale and ambition of this transformative expressway, poised to enhance connectivity, facilitate seamless travel, and drive economic growth across the country.

In addition to the immediate project, the Senior Minister outlined an expansive vision for future expressway development. The prospect of a fourth expressway route was presented, potentially spanning from Phnom Penh to Kratie, continuing through Snuol and Mondulkiri to Sen Monorom, and further extending to Koh Nhek, Banlung, Stung Treng, O Pong Moan, Preah Vihear, Siem Reap, and ultimately circling back to Phnom Penh. These forward-thinking plans reflect Cambodia’s commitment to advancing its transport infrastructure network to unlock new opportunities and potential for the nation.

Recently, the construction of the second Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway and one main bridge across the Mekong River was officially opened on June 7, 2023. (Read more)
