Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway and Majestic Bridge: A Groundbreaking Chapter in Cambodia’s Infrastructure Development

 

The momentous ground-breaking ceremony for the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway and a majestic main bridge marked the commencement of construction on June 7, 2023 under the distinguished presidency of Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and the esteemed presence of His Excellency Wang Wentian, the Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia. This landmark event signifies Cambodia’s relentless commitment to advancing its infrastructure, fostering economic growth, and enhancing regional connectivity.

The Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway, spanning an impressive length of 135.10 km, will seamlessly connect Thmor Kor commune in Lvea Em district, Kandal province to Chrakmtes commune in Bavet city, Svay Rieng province. This transformative route comprises a 4.1 km stretch traversing Kandal province, followed by a 70.9 km segment in Prey Veng province, and culminating in a 60.1 km passage through Svay Rieng province.

The expressway’s construction is set to be carried out by the esteemed China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC), adhering to a 48-month timeline and scheduled for completion in 2027.

This monumental project, with an estimated investment of US$1.35 billion, operates under a visionary 50-year construction-operation-transfer (BOT) investment model. The China Bridge and Road Corporation will contribute 20 percent of the investment, with the remaining 80 percent secured through a company loan.

Additionally, the Royal Government of Cambodia has embarked on the ambitious endeavor of constructing a majestic bridge across the Mekong River. This awe-inspiring bridge will seamlessly connect Dei Eth commune in Kien Svay district to Thmor Kor commune in Lvea Em district, integrating flawlessly with the expressway. The bridge project is allocated a budget of US$232.58 million, reflecting Cambodia’s unwavering dedication to transformative infrastructure development. (Read more)

Sun Chanthol, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, emphasized the profound economic benefits these ventures will bestow upon the nation. The high economic internal rate of return (EIRR) of approximately 20 percent promises substantial returns on investment and catalyzes Cambodia’s progress. Moreover, the newly established expressway will serve as a vital artery within the ASEAN Highway 1 (AH-1) network, facilitating seamless trade and freight movement between Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
