Cambodia Enhances Port Management & Development: A Workshop for Zoning Strategies

In an effort to strengthen administrative management and enhance efficiency across its maritime operations, Cambodia is focusing on its 103 ports. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport is currently developing comprehensive zoning documents as part of the “Capacity Building Project for Port Administration Management.”

This initiative was outlined in a recent workshop led by HE Peng Po Nea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, alongside Mr. Nagase Kensuke, Japan Charge d’Affaires in Cambodia, and HE the Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, Mr. SANUI Kazumasa, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to Cambodia. The event brought together various stakeholders to discuss and provide input on the proposed port zoning documents.

Minister Peng Po Nea emphasised the significance of gathering feedback to ensure that the port zoning framework is effective and aligns with Cambodia’s specific context. The goal is to implement these plans effectively within the framework set for 2025.

As part of its broader vision for sustainable and transparent port development from 2024-2025, the Royal Government of Cambodia has outlined a comprehensive strategy to enhance its maritime infrastructure. This includes transforming Sihanoukville Port into a regional logistical hub and developing a master plan for port operations.

In its strategic framework for river port development from 2025 to 2033, the government aims to improve connectivity between Cambodia’s rivers and seas, enhancing the nation’s overall water transport capabilities.

Of the 103 ports in Cambodia, 26 are sea ports and 77 are river ports situated along the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and Bassac rivers. Notably, the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP) and Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (PAS) serve as the two international gateways, playing crucial roles in facilitating trade and economic growth.

This concerted effort demonstrates Cambodia’s commitment to developing a robust and efficient port system, ensuring the country can meet its future logistical needs and enhance its position in regional maritime trade.
