Cambodia Set to Launch First Wind Power Plant in Mondulkiri Province by 2026

In a significant move toward sustainable energy, Cambodia is preparing to inaugurate its first wind power plant in Mondulkiri province, with an initial capacity of 150 megawatts expected to be operational in 2026. This announcement was made during a recent meeting of alumni from the Electricity of Cambodia, chaired by Minister of Mines and Energy Keo Rattanak.

Dr. Prang Jalsa, the Royal Government of Cambodia’s delegate and General Director of Electricity of Cambodia, revealed ambitious plans for the region. He confirmed that the wind power project is part of a broader initiative, which will ultimately see Mondulkiri host a 900-megawatt wind power plant, bolstered by ongoing developments in other renewable energy sources.

The Minister emphasized that the government is committed to achieving at least 70% clean and green energy by 2030, with a long-term vision of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. “This project is not just about energy production; it’s about preserving our environment and securing a sustainable future for our planet,” he stated.

As of August 2025, Cambodia’s national system has met a maximum annual electricity demand of 3,371 megawatts, with total generation nearing 3,400 megawatts, which includes small imports from neighboring Vietnam and Laos.

At the heart of this renewable energy initiative is the French company Blue Circle. Since it opened its first office in Phnom Penh in 2015, Blue Circle has been at the forefront of developing, financing, and operating renewable energy projects in Southeast Asia. The choice of Mondulkiri province for this groundbreaking wind power conversion project underscores the region’s potential for renewable energy development.

As Cambodia gears up for this monumental step in its energy journey, the nation is poised to redefine its energy landscape and contribute to global sustainability efforts. The launch of this wind power plant is a testament to the country’s determination to embrace renewable energy and combat climate change.
