Cambodia to See Massive Infrastructure Investment From Chinese Firms

Chinese companies are to invest heavily in Cambodia infrastructure as a result of the recent meeting between Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Chinese investors in China.

On 21 January, 2019, Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s official Facebook page posted a five-minute video about the outcome of the meeting which saw three infrastructure firms express their interest in building massive infrastructure in Cambodia.

According to the video, Huaneng Group, a constructor of the Hydro Power Lower Sesan II in Stung Treng Province, plans to study and invest in solar power generation in the country. In addition, the group plans to build an oil or gas pipeline from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh along the upcoming expressway.

China’s Sinosteel Corporation said the company plans to build a submarine cable connecting Phnom Penh to Hong Kong in order to boost the country’s internet connection to a more efficient and faster speed. Currently, Cambodia has only one submarine cable.

Meanwhile, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), which has been investing in bridges and roads in Cambodia, such as the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway, also announced plans to invest in highway construction linking Phnom Penh to Bavet, construction of Road No. 15 and 51 as well as road connecting Koh Kong, Pursat and Battambang provinces.
