Cambodian PM Pushes Forward with Major Development of Four Northeastern Provinces Despite CLV-DTA Withdrawal

Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing the development of four northeastern provinces despite the nation’s recent exit from the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Cooperation (CLV-DTA). The premier made the announcement via a special voice message on 23 September 2024, underscoring that the Royal Government will proceed with essential infrastructure and economic initiatives in the region.

PM Hun Manet assured the public that the withdrawal from the 25-year-old CLV-DTA agreement will not impact the country’s strategic plans for the northeastern provinces. These plans include upgrading border posts with neighbouring countries and constructing a border ring road, all set to foster regional economic growth by 2025. The Prime Minister specifically expressed his appreciation to the 700,000 philanthropists who have collectively contributed approximately USD 21 million to fund the border infrastructure project, particularly the ring road development.

Cambodia officially withdrew from the CLV-DTA on 20 September 2024, citing concerns about the potential misuse of the initiative by extremist groups seeking to mislead the Cambodian population. Despite this, Hun Manet’s administration remains focused on regional progress, ensuring that the northeastern region will continue to receive the attention and investment required for long-term growth and connectivity.

With Cambodia’s exit from the CLV-DTA, the government is determined to strengthen its national development agenda, aiming to make the northeastern region a hub of economic activity and cross-border trade.
