China-Cambodia Satellite Collaboration Enhances Protected Area Management

China’s Siwei Surveying and Mapping Technology Co., Ltd is poised to forge a groundbreaking partnership with Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment (MoE), aiming to revolutionise the management, conservation, and protection of protected areas and forests through satellite technology. This significant development emerged from a productive meeting between Dr Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, and Mr Zhang Xiaodong, Director of Siwei Surveying and Mapping Technology Co., Ltd, on the afternoon of 18 March 2024.

During the meeting, Mr Zhang Xiaodong highlighted the company’s advanced capabilities, boasting a fleet of 40 Earth observation satellites orbiting the globe, capable of capturing high-resolution satellite imagery and generating valuable data. This data, transmitted from satellites, holds immense potential for a myriad of applications, ranging from defence intelligence to environmental protection and disaster monitoring.

Expressing a keen interest in leveraging modern technology for forest protection, Dr Eang Sophalleth emphasised the ministry’s commitment to harnessing satellite data for enhanced monitoring and enforcement efforts. Recognising the potential synergies, he welcomed the opportunity for in-depth discussions to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of integrating satellite technology into Cambodia’s conservation strategies.

Beyond discussions with the MoE, Siwei Surveying and Mapping Technology Co., LTD also engaged in fruitful deliberations with HE Say Sam Al, Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction on 19 March.

The Ministry of Land Management has previously unveiled the establishment of permanent satellite measurement stations (CORS) across strategic locations in Cambodia, including Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Speu, Siem Reap, and Stung Treng provinces.

These state-of-the-art stations play a multifaceted role, facilitating various crucial functions such as precise measurement, comprehensive data collection, accurate mapping, adherence to construction principles, quality control in infrastructure development, establishment of communication networks, and formulation of smart city planning initiatives.
