China’s Belt and Road Initiative Catalyzes Investment Influx and Propels Cambodia’s Economic Growth

Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Samdech Hun Sen, has hailed China’s transformative Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for its pivotal role in attracting substantial investment to Cambodia, bolstering economic development, and creating employment opportunities for the nation’s citizens.

During the groundbreaking ceremony for the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway, a momentous $1.3 billion infrastructure project, Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed his deep appreciation for the cooperation fostered through the Belt and Road Initiative, highlighting the manifold advantages it has bestowed upon Cambodia.

“The Belt and Road Initiative, initiated by the Chinese President, has been immensely beneficial to Cambodia through infrastructure grants, loans, and significant investments in major development projects,” stated Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Under the ambit of the BRI, Cambodia has witnessed the realization of several monumental ventures, including the Chinese-backed Angkor Siem Reap International Airport, the Chinese-financed Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, and the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway, among numerous other projects, facilitated through concessional loans and grants from China.

On June 22, the Cambodian government and the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative, concurrently celebrating the enduring 65-year diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

The transformative impact of the BRI has invigorated Cambodia’s economic landscape, catalyzing a surge of investments and igniting a wave of development across various sectors. As the country forges ahead, leveraging the strategic cooperation facilitated by the BRI, Cambodia is poised to unlock new realms of growth, prosperity, and sustainable progress.
