Feasibility Study of Phnom Penh Rapid Transit to Complete Next Month

The feasibility studies for three choices for the Phnom Penh mass transit project are ongoing. The AGT and monorail choices have been completed, while the subway option will be finalised next month. In the meantime, the government is also seeking funds to implement this massive undertaking.

Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol said during the 2020 Work Progress and 2021 Goals Conference on 16 February that there are three options of the mass transit system.

“Initially, we requested JICA to study the AGT. The result showed that it could cost approximately US$2 billion. As we could not afford this high expense, we allowed two other Chinese firms to conduct studies on monorail and subway,” said HE Chanthol.

“Now, the monorail study has already been completed, and next month the subway will be completed too. Then, we will take these three options to report to Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen to decide, while we are also seeking funds at the same time,” he added.

Regarding the funding for this massive project, HE Sun Chanthol has strongly urged private companies to invest, which can be in the form of BOT or other structure depending on investors’ preferences.
