Five Khmer Students to Launch the First Cambodian Satellite to Space Next Year

A group of five Cambodian high school students at the Liger Leadership Academy are developing Cambodia’s first mini-satellite and are planning to launch it from Cambodia into space for the first time in 2021.

The project is called Liger CubeSat, which is a joint project of five high school students and six mentors with years of space experience.

CubeSats are a standardised nanosatellite that performs several functions: space and communications research, technological demonstrations, educational projects, and commercial projects.

Once the CubeSat is launched into space, it will orbit the Earth in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which has an altitude between 160 – 2000km.
The role of the Liger Academy CubeSat is to take pictures of the Earth and transmit those pictures back to the ground, which will the first time this has been achieved by Cambodia.

The group said that their mission is to develop future engineers and create positive impacts on students, schools, communities, and Cambodia’s reputation while introducing new technology. Not too far from now, the first Cambodian astronaut could be sitting in a classroom tracking their satellite.

The group are also doing fundraising to make the project come true. For those who are interested, please click here.
