Gov’t Mulls Cutting Public Infrastructure Spending Amid Ongoing Pandemic

The Cambodian government is considering reducing public investment spending, which also includes expenses on public infrastructure, to prepare the budget to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the launch ceremony on the vaccination campaign to people aged 12 -17 years old on Sunday 01 August, Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen said the government is now preparing to reduce more public investment projects.

“Thus far, we have reduced the expenditures on the ministries and institutions at national level and sub-national level,” said PM Hun Sen.

“Now, we are also planning to reduce more public investment projects. For instance, there are some approved infrastructure projects; in the case of necessity, they will be reduced,” he added.

Nevertheless, PM Hun Sen has confirmed that from the beginning of the pandemic to now, the government has not reduced or cancelled any approved infrastructure projects.

He said despite the pandemic, the government is still spending millions of dollars in building roads such as those in Sihanoukville and Siem Reap.
