MoEYS asks landowners to favour educational institutions facing COVID-19 crisis

The Ministry of Education has requested landowners to favor educational institutions while COVID-19 continues to spread. This call for action has been made further to pressure from 113 private educational institutions who have claimed that their schools have been severely affected by the impact of COVID 19 and are facing bankruptcy.

In their urgent meeting on 3 April 2020, the private education institution members of the Cambodia Higher Education Association complained that they are not able to pay building fees and staff salaries since their schools closed in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s nationwide announcement of early vacations on 15 March.

In response to this concern, in the MoEYS’s current announcement, dated 13 April 2020, on promoting distance learning and e-learning led by private institutions at all levels, the Ministry asked property owners and both national and private banks to lessen payment conditions for educational institutions affected by COVID-19.

“MoEYS would like to request all property owners to reduce rent for some private educational institutions so that we can help release some burden for them and achieve win-win solutions for all,” the announcement reads.

“MoEYS would like to request the national bank to take necessary intervention with private and commercial banks whose debtors are educational institutions to reduce interest rates for loans and delay terms of payment for their debtors if possible“, continued the announcement.

PM Hun Sen recently announced on 7 April, asking rental property owners to reduce rental fees during the virus crisis given the fact that most businesses are losing profits.
