MoWRAM Initiates Swift Upgrades on Irrigation Systems Across Five Provinces to Beat Rainy Season

In a significant move to enhance agricultural productivity ahead of the impending rainy season, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MoWRAM) is fast-tracking the repair and improvement of critical irrigation systems in five provinces. This ambitious initiative, targeting key infrastructures including the North Melang Chrey Canal in Kampong Speu province and the Spean Sreng Irrigation System in Banteay Meanchey province among others, was detailed in a recent update from the Ministry on 24 April 2024.

The ministry’s latest report unveils substantial progress in the refurbishment efforts across the designated areas. Notably, the North Meling Chrey Canal project in Sangkat Rokar Thom, Kampong Speu province has reached a 50% completion milestone, with extensive repairs conducted over a 14,500-metre stretch. This project alone encompasses 27 construction sites, with a 10% completion rate, alongside three new constructions at 35% completion.

Secondly, in Banteay Meanchey province, the Spean Sreng Irrigation System which is located in Spean Sreng commune, Phnom Srok district has seen 45 construction sites achieving a 20% completion rate, with an additional new construction project reaching 30%.

Thirdly, the Chhnuk Trou Irrigation System in Prey Sniet and Reap communes, Pearang district, Prey Veng province reports a 42% completion rate across 27 construction sites and five new projects.

Fourth, the Spean Sreng Trapeang Ambel Irrigation System in Siem Reap province has 34 buildings under rehabilitation at 10% completion and a new building at 20%.

Fifth, the Tumnob Lok Irrigation System in Oddar Meanchey province is also under significant renovation. The project has initiated work on two new sites.

By enhancing water management and supply, MoWRAM aims to mitigate potential adverse effects of the rainy season, ensuring sustainability and resilience in the face of climate variability.
