MPWT Launches Cambodia’s First Public EV Charging Station

The first public electric vehicle (EV) charging station located within the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) complex, was officially put into use on 26 March 2022, with at least 10 others to follow by the end of this year.

The launch event was presided over by MPWT Minister HE Sun Chanthol along with other stakeholders including UNDP, the Federation of Automobile Associations in Cambodia, and 12 EV companies.

The event also allowed the private sector to showcase EV products and present the most-update related technology to the public.

“This event aims to spread awareness to the public about the technology, equipment and benefits of EVs, and to encourage more EV usage in Cambodia,” said HE Sun Chanthol.

According to the plan, by 2022, at least 10 more EV charging stations will appear in key locations such as Battambang, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, gas stations, national roads, among others.

HE Sun Chanthol added Cambodia aims to achieve 40% usage of electric cars and 70% electric motorcycles by 2050, in line with the Long-term Strategy for Carbon Neutrality 2050.

According to the MPWT report, the number of registered electric vehicles was only 2 in 2020 and increased to 62 in 2021. Surprisingly, in just the first three months of 2022, there was a total of 47 EVs registered, an increase of 671%.
