MPWT to Build East Ring Road 3 First, Ring Road 4 Next Priority

The government has unveiled a plan to build east Ring Road 3, connecting the under-construction section eastern side of Phnom Penh in Lvea Em district, Kandal province, to make a complete ring road. Meanwhile, construction of the 4th ring road will be the next priority.

The remarks were made by Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol in a Facebook live event held on Monday 30 August.

HE Sun Chanthol said the current under-construction Ring Road 3 is only half a circle given the limited budget. Building the east side is costly as the government have to build bridges crossing the Mekong River.

“Thus, the next step is to build bridges and roads on the east side of the Mekong River to make Ring Road 3 complete, before starting construction on Ring Road 4,” he said.

The construction of the western Ring Road 3 is proceeding smoothly despite the community COVID-19 outbreak. As of May, progress is about 50% complete. (Read more)

This ring road has a total length of 52.9km, passing through Kandal province for 38km and Phnom Penh for about 15km. The project is expected to cost approximately US$273 million, which is a loan from China.
