New Port Facility in Koh Kong Province Inaugurated & Initially Tested

In a significant stride toward bolstering both tourism and international trade, the inauguration of the Koh Kong Port in Koh Kong province marked a pivotal moment in Cambodia’s coastal development. This grand ceremony, presided over by Mrs. I Neari Net, Deputy Governor of Koh Kong Province, on 25 September 2023, signified the opening of new avenues for transportation and trade along the coast.

The inauguration event was doubly auspicious as it coincided with the welcoming of the port’s first vessel, the ‘Koh Kong Port Me Lek Min Ek,’ symbolising the readiness of this modern port facility to serve the maritime needs of the region.

Mrs. I Neari Net, in her address during the ceremony, revealed that earlier in September, she had led a delegation from Koh Kong province to China’s Liaoning area, to attend the China Silk Road International Logistics Fair. The primary objectives were to foster cooperation between Koh Kong Port and Liaoning Port and to enhance international ties between these two strategic port hubs.

During this productive visit, several key agreements were reached:

  1. Mutual Support: Both sides pledged their unwavering support to each other’s endeavours, aligning their cooperation with relevant laws and regulations.
  2. Expanded Collaboration: Emphasising the importance of collaboration in the domains of trade ports and logistics, the two sides committed to strengthening exchanges and cooperation.
  3. Agricultural Trade: With the launch of the port, a significant boost in agricultural trade is anticipated. The agreement included plans for direct exports of agricultural products from Koh Kong to China through the newly inaugurated port.
  4. Market Development: Koh Kong province requested support from its Chinese counterparts in seeking agricultural markets, aiming to provide stability and economic opportunities for farmers not only in Koh Kong but also in neighbouring provinces.
