Ring Road 3 Construction 50% Complete, Says MPTW Spokesman

The construction of Ring Road 3 is proceeding smoothly despite the ongoing lockdown and COVID community outbreak. To date, progress is about 50% complete, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) spokesman Sotheayuth Heang on 09 May.

If there are no further changes in plan or unexpected events, the completion is scheduled for 5 September 2022, he added.

The ring road has a total length of 52.9km, passing through Kandal province for 38km and Phnom Penh for about 15km. The project is expected to cost approximately US$273 million, which is a loan from China. (Read more)

Construction began in January 2019, while the construction work is being implemented by the Shanghai Construction Group Co., Ltd. with technical inspection by Guangzhou Wanan Construction Supervision Co., Ltd.

Mr Sotheayuth said that this road will become a major ring road connecting NR6, NR5, NR4, NR3, NR2 and NR21. The route will also include several bridges cross the Bassac River and Koh Anloung Chen, connecting to NR1.

“Besides, this road will connect to the new Phnom Penh Autonomous Port in Kien Svay district, and will also pass through the ASEAN Highway AH1 and AH11, the main corridor of Greater Mekong Subregion,” said Mr Sotheayuth.

Ring Road 3 will also help ease cross-border transportation, promote international trade, and regional logistics system. Most importantly, this project has turned the land plots on both sides of the route into potential housing, logistics and industrial development zones.

Besides Ring Road 3, the government is also currently studying Ring Road 4, which will be a 195-kilometre-long road, passing through Kampong Speu, Takeo, Kandal and Prey Veng.

According to the latest information from Spokesman Vasim Sorya on 25 February, the study is still in review, while the ministry has no plans to start construction yet. (Read more)

It should also be noted that the ministry has asked the China Road and Bridge Corporation to study the fourth ring road project since 2018, with the company completed in October 2020.
