Samdech Hun Sen: Develop Sihanoukville early to connect the three Cambodia’s economic poles

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen has highlighted the cause and necessity of the development of the 34 major roads and infrastructure in Sihanoukville, which he said is the initiative stage of building and connecting the three main poles of Cambodia’s economy.

Speaking at a conference during his inspection of the progress of the 34 road construction projects in Sihanoukville on June 1, 2020, the Prime Minister of Cambodia said that Cambodia is divided into three pillars: Phnom Penh is the first economic pole, Sihanoukville is the second, and Siem Reap is the third.

In the meantime, he also mentioned the distinctive features of each of the economic poles, which for Sihanoukville itself would have been the first smart city due to the multi-sectoral and multi-purpose of the province’s development potential.

In that occasion, he also expressed his ambition for development of economic poles in other regions of the Northeast area of the country, as it has great potential in agriculture, industry, tourism and mineral development. The new economic pole mentioned by the prime minister is likely to refer to Mondulkiri province.

Reminded that in May, the Ministry of Tourism has just launched a multi-sectoral integrated Mondulkiri tourism development master plan that aims to have the airport in the northeast province to connect to Siem Reap, Sihanoukville province and to other Southeast Asian and East Asia tourism centers as well.
