Smart Bins for Siem Reap Smart City Project: Authority Trials IoT Waste Management System

The Siem Reap Provincial Administration has embarked on a pioneering Smart City project by introducing an Internet of Things (IoT) waste management system in the Slor Kram district. This initiative announced on the official Facebook page of the provincial administration on 5 June 2024, aims to enhance waste collection efficiency through the innovative use of the “Smart Clean Siem Reap” mobile app.

The project involves the distribution of standardised garbage bins to Slor Kram Sangkat to streamline waste collection and transportation. This marks a significant step towards improving smart waste management in Siem Reap, as the administration seeks to address inefficiencies identified in a 2023 “Time and Motion Survey.” The survey revealed issues with the use of variously sized bins and unclear collection schedules, which hindered effective waste management.

In collaboration with partners like GIZ and Gaia, the project has introduced uniformly sized bins and the “Smart Clean Siem Reap” app. This app notifies residents of the weekly garbage collection schedule, allowing timely preparation of waste. It also enables real-time monitoring by garbage collection companies, facilitating easier and more efficient management of waste in Siem Reap.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to implement smart city solutions in the province. Siem Reap has already launched eight pilot projects aimed at testing smart city implementations. Additionally, JICA has been working on the “Smart City Implementation Project to Solve Urban Problems in Siem Reap” since 2022, in partnership with the provincial administration and various other collaborators.
