Singapore Resumes Construction of Changi Airport’s Largest Passenger Terminal After Pandemic Delay

In a significant milestone for Singapore’s aviation sector, the construction of Terminal 5 (T5) at Changi Airport has officially commenced following a two-year pause brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The ground-breaking ceremony, which took place on 14 May 2025, was presided over by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

Prime Minister Wong highlighted that the new terminal is set to enhance Changi Airport’s capacity by over 50%. “Terminal 5 will be constructed on a sprawling 1,080 hectares—equivalent to the combined size of all existing terminals at Changi. This expansion will allow us to accommodate an additional 50 million passengers annually,” he stated.

Originally announced in 2013, the ambitious expansion plan faced delays due to the pandemic, but it is now back on track. T5 is anticipated to open its doors in the mid-2030s, which will bolster Changi Airport’s connectivity to over 200 cities worldwide—a significant increase from its current reach of around 170 destinations.

The new terminal will also feature a comprehensive transportation hub, integrating MRT, taxi, and bus services for seamless passenger transfers.

Changi Airport, currently ranked as the world’s fourth-busiest international air transport hub, reached a record milestone by handling 68.4 million passengers as of 31 March 2025. This expansion is poised to further solidify its status in the global aviation landscape, heralding a new era for air travel in the region.
