Spain Mulls Building World’s Largest Floating Wind Farm

Spanish utility Iberdrola is considering investing over US$1.2 billion in a 300MW floating windfarm northwest of Spain and is currently seeking funds from the EU’s Next Generation programme, reported GCR.

The scheme is expected to begin this year and become operational by 2026. If approved, it would be the largest floating wind farm built so far and would create more than 2,800 jobs.

The firm has yet to reveal the exact location of the project, but it broadly mentioned that project would be located in Spain’s northwest region of Galicia, Andalucía and the Canary Isles.

According to GCR, the project is one of 150 initiatives submitted by the firm to the Next Generation EU programme in the fields of electrification, sustainable mobility, green hydrogen, innovative renewables, smart grids, circular economy and energy storage. In total, these schemes could mobilise investments of approximately US$25 billion.

Besides this project, there are many ongoing wind farm projects in Spain. Greenalia has launched a 50MW project off the Canary archipelago and plans a further 200MW.
