Gov’t plans to spend US$30m for mine clearing in 2023

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen has approved a budget of US$ 30 million for the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) to conduct a mine clearing on over 180 million square metres of land in 2023,  as the institution had already cleared 411 square kilometres of mined land thus far.

According to HE Ly Thuch, First Deputy Chairman CMAC on 26 January, this budget package has dropped into the CMAC budget and is administered by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

CMAC will distribute this budget into the following units:

-The Army will clear a total area of 46 million square metres in Phnom Sruoch District, Kampong Speu Province, Svay Chek District, Banteay Meanchey Province, and Samrong City, Oddar Meanchey Province.

– National Peacekeeping Center will clear a total area of 27 million square meters in Snuol district, Kratie province, Kirisakor district and Koh Kong district, Koh Kong province, and Mondulkiri province.

-CMAC will clear a total area of 106 million square meters in Pailin, Preah Vihear, Pursat, and Siem Reap provinces.

To date, Cambodia has 18 provincial capitals that are mine-free and 7 more provinces will be cleared by 2025, including Koh Kong, Pursat, Battambang, Pailin, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, and Phrea Vihear.

CMAC also planned to build the world’s biggest mine-shaped museum which will cost over US$ 20 million (Read more)
