Gov’t Unveils Ambitious 12 Million m3 Reservoir Project to Propel Northeastern Economic Growth

In a strategic move to bolster economic development in Cambodia’s northeastern region, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, has successfully implemented the construction of the “Upper Dam, Lower Dam, and O’Te Reservoir”. This monumental project is set to supply a staggering 12 million cubic metres of clean water, catering to the needs of four provinces in the region—Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri, and Ratanakkiri, as outlined on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, dated 28 December 2023.

Located in Oreang district and Sen Monorom city, Mondulkiri province, the O Te Reservoir Dam and Upper Lower Reservoir Dam represent a vital component of the ministry’s master plan aligned with the Royal Government’s Pentagon strategy. HE Tho Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, emphasised the project’s significance during an inspection of the Mondulkiri province site, stating, “This project is built to supply water in all areas to meet the needs of the provinces in the Northeast.”

The ambitious undertaking serves a dual purpose—providing a sustainable water supply to the northeastern provinces and mitigating the risks associated with floods and droughts, prevalent consequences of climate change and global warming. Minister Tho Chetha highlighted that beyond its functional aspects, the reservoirs are poised to catalyse ecotourism growth and elevate the agro-industrial sector in the region.

Commending the progress achieved, Minister Tho Chetha expressed his appreciation for the collaboration between departments, local authorities, and stakeholders. He urged continued cooperation to ensure the success, durability, and long-term benefits of the project for the local populace, emphasising its pivotal role in advancing national economic growth.
