PM leans towards subway construction over skytrain for Phnom Penh mass transit

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen is leaning toward subway construction over the skytrain option for the long-awaiting Phnom Penh mass transit project, emphasizing subway cause less impact.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of two new flyovers in Phnom Penh on 31 August, PM Hun Sen said that the subway option could be better than others.

“If we take the US$1.8-billion AGT project that was studied by JICA, it has to run over people’s houses and this is complicated. Thus, the most effective option is the subway,” said PM Hun Sen.

He added the subway can connect the passengers \ in Phnom Penh and reach out to Kandal province.

According to the initial plan, there are three options for mass transit systems in Phnom Penh including AGT, monorail, and subway. The AGT was studied by JICA, while the subway and monorail are being studied by Chinese firms. (Read more)
