Tourism Port in Mekong river plans to be constructed in Kean Svay district

An international standard tourism port has been planned to construct on the lower Mekong River located in Kean Svay district, Kandal province by a private company aiming to contribute and enhance tourism sector development in Phnom Penh.

The port construction project was raised up by Prince Real Estate Group in a meeting with H.E. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, held on June 4 at the ministry.

Xu Zhixing, CEO of Prince Real Estate Group, was quoted in Tourism Ministry’s Facebook post saying that the firm will build the tourism from 2020 to 2023 at its subsidy firm -Prince Manor Resort, located in Kean Svay district.

H.E. Thong Khon expressed supports on the port project, stressing that he wants to see cruise ships to serve service in Phnom Penh.

He said potentials from the Mekong River can be used for development in agriculture sector and tourism sector. However, since Cambodia has yet taken potential fully from the Mekong River, the Tourism Ministry has tried to boost investment along the river.

Vasim Sorya, spokesman at Ministry of Public Works and Transport, told Construction and Property Magazine on June 5 that the ministry welcomes the tourism port project although the ministry has yet received application on building the port from the company.

“[We] have not known in detail, but in principle any companies have to ask license at the CDC first and from the Ministry of Environment and then conduct the impact assessment study. And if it is related to tourism sector, the firm is required to ask licenses from the Ministry of Tourism and then go to Ministry of Public Works and Transport,” Vasim Sorya said.

“In general, tourism ports serve tourist transportation and they can also be used as waterway transportation. For the later purpose, it could enormously contribute in enhancing the waterway transportation in Cambodia,” he added.
