Vietnam Leads Southeast Asia’s Energy Transition with New USD 15.5 Billion Commitment from EU​ & US

Vietnam is emerging as a leading hub for renewable energy in Southeast Asia, driven by a USD 15.5 billion pledge from international partners, including the UK, US, and EU, under the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) agreement. This commitment aims to fund renewable energy projects, reduce the nation’s reliance on coal, and support its ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, according to Tuoitrenews.vn news published on 29 December 2024.

Kitty Bu, Vice-President for Southeast Asia at the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), emphasised Vietnam’s vast renewable energy potential, particularly in wind and solar power, alongside advancements in battery energy storage systems (BESS). Vietnam’s installed solar power capacity of 17 GW in 2023 already surpasses the combined capacity of all ASEAN nations, underscoring its leadership in the renewable energy sector.

Bu pointed to Vietnam’s ambitious goal to increase the green economy’s contribution to GDP from USD 6.7 billion in 2020 to USD 300 billion by 2050. Achieving this requires substantial investments, estimated at USD 135 billion by 2030 and USD 511 billion by 2050, to develop infrastructure, expand energy storage, and modernise the national grid.

Key Initiatives Driving Vietnam’s Energy Transition:

1. National Green Growth Strategy 2021-30: Framework for sustainable economic growth.
2. Power Plan 8: Roadmap for energy sector restructuring.
3. JETP Agreement: International collaboration mobilising funds for clean energy projects.

British Consul General Alexandra Smith lauded Vietnam’s proactive role, stating, “Through its net-zero commitment, Vietnam has positioned itself as a regional leader in sustainable development and an ideal destination for green investment.” Similarly, Dutch Consul General Daniel Stork highlighted European contributions, such as a €17 million wind farm in Tra Vinh Province, while French companies like Green Yellow Vietnam have installed photovoltaic systems generating energy for 8,300 homes annually.

Additional projects, such as the Bac Ai pumped storage hydropower project in Ninh Thuan Province, exemplify Vietnam’s collaboration with global partners, including the French Development Agency and the European Investment Bank. This initiative, supported by the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, is a first-of-its-kind project in Vietnam and a testament to the country’s commitment to innovation in energy infrastructure.

Vietnam’s government policies, international collaborations, and robust investment strategies underscore its potential to become a model for sustainable energy development, transforming the region’s approach to renewable energy and green growth.
