EU Commits US$13m Grant for Bakheng Water Treatment Plant Phase 3

The European Union (EU) has pledged a grant of US$13 million for the implementation of Bakheng Water Treatment Plant Phase 3, as announced by HE Jutta Urpilainen, European Commissioner for International Partnerships, during a visit to the plant on 13 March. HE Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MISTI), also participated in the visit, as outlined in a press release.

With the successful completion of Phases 1 and 2 of the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant, which has significantly enhanced access to safe and clean water outside of Phnom Penh, the EU remains committed to supporting Cambodia’s water infrastructure development.

Commissioner Urpilainen stated, Through our continued engagement, I am proud to announce our commitment of US$13 million (12 million EUR) grant funding to Bakheng Water Treatment Plant Phase 3 in collaboration with our European partner, AFD.”

Phases 1 and 2 of the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant, boasting a combined production capacity of 390,000 m3/day, have marked crucial milestones in Cambodia’s water infrastructure, providing potable water access to millions of individuals.

Moreover, the project has facilitated the installation of 170,000 new connections to the water supply network, including those for disadvantaged households, along with 25,000 connections to commercial establishments and factories.

The Phase 3 expansion signifies a significant stride toward ensuring sustainable water infrastructure and addressing the escalating demand for clean water in Phnom Penh and its vicinity.

HE Hem Vanndy expressed gratitude to the European Union and development partners for their unwavering support in advancing Cambodia’s potable water sector. “The Bakheng Water Treatment Plant underscores our commitment to delivering quality, safe, sustainable, and affordable water, vital for household consumption and investment attraction, which are pivotal to Cambodia’s development,” he concluded.
