Feasibility Study on Airport Construction in Mondulkiri Province Unveiled

The Cambodian government has unveiled a project for an airport construction in Mondulkiri province to boost tourism development, agro-industry and agro-tourism, and in particular to connect the north-eastern region with other provinces and the region by air.

The feasibility study on the airport construction is in the master plan of developing new tourism products for the country’s north-eastern region, according to Tourism Ministry spokesperson Mr Chuk Chumnor.

“The ministry will be discussing the project with local authorities and civil aviation,” Mr Chuk said, citing that the master plan is scheduled to wrap up by the end of this year or early next year.

According to Mondulkiri provincial governor Svay Sam Eang, the new airport construction would be in Ou Reang district, Mondulkiri province.

“The province has land space for constructing it already and it is located in Ou Reang district and the expenditure of construction would depend on the national level,” Mr Svay Sam Eang said.

Mr Svay Sam Eang said that the new airport construction would help the province’s development in all sectors, particularly in the tourism sector thanks to its potential in eco-tourism.

“Due to the province being good at attracting tourists, if an airport is built, it will further attract more tourist inflows from both nationals and foreigners because currently the travel to the province is far,” he said.

There is a former airport in Mondulkiri province, but currently the location of former airport is being developed as a park.

Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said in March that there is a need to construct a new airport in the area is because it will become a major economic hub in the northeast of the country. The region will develop with agro-industry, agro-tourism and other economic sectors that will boost national economic growth. (Read more)
