Cambodia’s Steel Imports Surge in Early 2025

Cambodia’s steel imports significantly rose in the first quarter of 2025, with the nation importing iron and steel valued at USD217 million. This marks a remarkable 75% increase compared to USD124 million during the same period last year.

According to a report released on 10 April by the General Department of Customs and Excise, iron and steel imports accounted for 2.9% of Cambodia’s total imports, which reached USD 7,573 million in the first three months of the year. Notably, March saw iron and steel imports hit USD 72 million, reflecting a dramatic 90% increase from USD 37 million in March 2024.

The Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) latest Outlook, published on 9 April, forecasts a robust 6.1% economic growth for Cambodia in 2025, followed by 6.2% in 2026. This growth is anticipated to be driven by rising external demand for manufactured goods and a continued recovery in the tourism sector. (Read more)

Construction and real estate sectors are expected to recover gradually, buoyed by heightened industrial activities and ongoing residential development projects. However, it’s worth noting that the real estate market may experience a slower recovery due to decreased foreign investments.

As Cambodia’s economy rebounds, the surge in steel imports underscores the growing activity within the construction industry, hinting at a positive outlook for the country’s future development.
