Ferrovial Uses Digital Technology and AI to Power Long-Term Infrastructure Growth

Ferrovial, one of the world’s largest infrastructure companies, is transforming how major transportation projects are designed, built, and operated through digital engineering, centralized data management, and artificial intelligence.

The strategy has helped the company reduce project risks, improve efficiency, and strengthen its long-term concession business, which now accounts for the majority of its value.

The company develops, finances, constructs, and operates major assets—including toll highways and airports. Because its revenue depends heavily on infrastructure remaining operational for decades, completing projects on schedule is critical to avoiding construction delays and lost toll income.

To minimize these risks, Ferrovial has standardized digital workflows across its projects using Bentley Systems’ engineering software. Design, construction, and operational teams work from a shared digital environment, eliminating duplicate work, reducing errors, and ensuring that project information remains consistent throughout the entire asset lifecycle.

The approach also enables field teams to access 3D models, update asset information in real time, and prepare infrastructure for long-term maintenance before construction is completed.

Ferrovial also adopted technologies such as drones, LiDAR, and digital engineering platforms to improve productivity and manage large-scale projects with fewer personnel. This strategy recently contributed to winning a new USD 1.5 billion contract on Texas’ Grand Parkway toll road.

Ferrovial is now extending its digital strategy through artificial intelligence. Working closely with Bentley Systems, Ferrovial is exploring Model Context Protocol (MCP) technology, which will allow AI agents to interact directly with engineering software while keeping human experts in control.
