GGGI Collaborates to Develop Low-Carbon Transport Strategy for Cleaner Air in Siem Reap

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has embarked on a collaborative endeavor to establish a roadmap for a low-carbon transportation strategy aimed at combating air pollution in Siem Reap. The project, launched on 5th April 2023 and supported by the French Development Agency (AFD), spans a duration of two years.

An integral component of this initiative involves the preparation of an emissions inventory and the development of an air quality management system, which will be integrated into the Ministry of Environment’s comprehensive database.

During the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Frank Rijsberman, Director General of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), underscored the environmental hazards that air pollution poses to human health in ASEAN cities and Phnom Penh. The implementation of air quality monitoring systems will furnish crucial insights to guide efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving overall air quality.

In Cambodia, the primary factors contributing to air pollution are biomass burning and transportation, stated Dr. Rijsberman. He further emphasized that the ongoing transition from fossil fuel-based transportation to electric vehicles presents a significant opportunity to address the issues of air pollution and climate crisis.

With the commencement of this project, Dr. Rijsberman expressed optimism in achieving dual objectives: enhancing air quality and expediting the adoption of electric vehicles throughout Cambodia.

GGGI has already conducted a preliminary feasibility study on the implementation of electric buses (E-Bus) for public transport services, demonstrating a smooth path forward for the project. (Read more)
