Government groundbreaking Major Road Development Project in Kampong Thom Province

On March 31, 2025, the government groundbreaking an extensive construction project for nearly 93 kilometers of multi-lane roads in Kampong Thom Province, a significant step towards enhancing the region’s transportation infrastructure. The ceremony was chaired by H.E. Chhay Riththi Sen, Minister of Rural Development, alongside H.E. Vongsey Vissoth, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in Charge of the Council of Ministers.

During the event, H.E. Vongsey Vissoth expressed gratitude to the European Union, the French Government, and the German Government for their invaluable support in the rehabilitation and development of Cambodia’s physical and transportation infrastructure. Their contributions play a vital role in fostering progress across various sectors in the country.

In his address, H.E. Vongsey Vissoth urged all stakeholders to collaborate effectively in maintaining both existing roads and those currently under construction, ensuring long-term benefits for the communities they serve.

This road development project is part of the ambitious RID4CAM program, which has secured government counterpart funding along with cooperative financing from the German Development Bank (KfW), the French Agency for Development (AFD), and the European Union Fund (EU/AIF). The program encompasses a robust investment totaling 120.43 million euros (approximately 125 million US dollars). The primary aim is to construct 526.660 kilometers of double-decker asphalt and concrete roads, complemented by a range of infrastructure improvements, including art structures and a piped water distribution system for two communities.

The initiative is set to positively impact over 200,000 residents across seven targeted provinces, including Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Battambang, Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, and Prey Veng, significantly enhancing their quality of life and local economies. This project marks a significant milestone in Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its infrastructure and support sustainable development.
